Thoughts & Notions - Develop Critical Thinking and English Vocabulary
Thoughts & Notions, Second Edition is the second level in the highly acclaimed Reading & Vocabulary Development series. This textbook is specifically designed for students who have a basic foundation in English (Beginning level) and wish to progress to a Low-Intermediate proficiency.
While the first book in the series focuses on simple facts, “Thoughts & Notions” introduces students to deeper, more meaningful texts that cover abstract concepts, historical events, and cultural nuances. The primary goal of this manual is not only to expand the student’s vocabulary but also to teach them how to analyze reading material and express their opinions in an argumentative manner.
At this level, the unique methodology of the series is demonstrated through the following features:
- Thematic Diversity: The book is divided into five core units: Inventions, Customs, Why is it?, Individuals, and Interesting Places.
- Cyclical Vocabulary Reinforcement: New words are strategically distributed throughout the texts. Each word is repeated multiple times in various contexts, ensuring natural acquisition and long-term retention.
- Complex Sentence Structures: Compared to the previous level, this edition utilizes more sophisticated grammatical structures, preparing students to engage with real-world English materials.
- Active Learning Principle: Exercises are designed so that students can apply new vocabulary in practice rather than simply memorizing it through rote learning.
The Second Edition includes significant enhancements to improve the learning experience:
- Updated and Relevant Texts: The material has been revised to ensure it remains interesting and highly relevant for today’s students.
- Rich Visual Content: High-quality photographs from National Geographic are utilized, making it easier to visually perceive and understand abstract concepts.
- Grammar Sections: Special exercises have been added that focus on the specific grammatical nuances characteristic of the Low-Intermediate level.
- Collocation Instruction: Particular attention is paid to common word pairings (collocations), which helps make the student’s speech sound more natural and fluent.
The textbook is fully integrated with modern digital platforms:
- MyELT Online Workbook: An interactive workbook that allows students to work independently and receive instant feedback and grading.
- Audio Support: Audio versions of all texts are available online, which is essential for developing correct intonation and listening comprehension skills.
- Online Testing System: Students can periodically check their progress through specialized digital quizzes and assessments.
For instructors, “Thoughts & Notions” offers comprehensive support tools:
- Teacher’s Manual: A detailed guide providing lesson planning frameworks and additional classroom activities.
- Assessment CD-ROM: Powered by ExamView® technology, this allows teachers to create customized tests and quizzes in seconds.
- Presentation Tools: Software designed for interactive whiteboards, making lessons more engaging, immersive, and dynamic.
